Summer is merciless to those who cannot ask for help. We adjust our lives—cooling fans, chilled drinks, shaded retreats. But for the birds that glide through our skies and the squirrels that scurry across tree branches, the season brings only struggle.

Water, the most basic need for survival, is disappearing. The puddles that once formed in open fields no longer exist. The lakes shrink year by year, and the once-abundant water sources in cities are now concrete paths leading to nowhere.

A sparrow lands on a parched patch of earth, tilting its head, searching.

A squirrel stops by a broken pipe, hoping for a leak.

A crow pecks desperately at a discarded plastic bottle, trying to find even a single drop.

Some find nothing. Some don’t make it to another sunrise.
Most of us don’t see this suffering. Not because we don’t care, but because it happens in the quiet spaces we don’t think to look.
But once you see it, you cannot unsee it. And once you understand, you cannot ignore it.

An Unnoticed Act, An Immeasurable Impact

We decided to act—not with something grand or complicated, but with something simple: water pots. Small clay bowls placed in Lalbagh Botanical Garden, refilled each morning, ensuring that no bird or small animal went thirsty.

But this wasn’t just about Lalbagh. It was about setting an example showing people that they, too, could help. A pot on a balcony, a bowl in a backyard—small acts of kindness that could save countless lives.

To make a bigger impact, we planned to set up our Kalpaka tent—not for donations, but for awareness. Lalbagh is a place where thousands of visitors gather daily.

If they saw the silent struggle of these animals—birds hovering around dry taps, squirrels searching for moisture on scorching pavements—they would understand.

And once they understood, they would talk, share, and spread the movement beyond the park’s walls.

This was never just about placing water; it was about starting something bigger.

The Unexpected Answer That Inspired Us

The initial response was promising. Officials listened. There was interest. We followed every procedure, submitted an official request, and waited for the next step. But when we returned, reality greeted us.
The department was busy. Priorities had shifted. While our cause was acknowledged, it wasn’t something they could accommodate at the moment. It wasn’t rejection, just an indefinite pause.
But setbacks don’t stop movements—they shape them.
We had envisioned something beautiful—birds finding relief in the summer heat, visitors noticing, understanding, and perhaps taking action themselves.
While this step was delayed, the mission remained the same. The path may have changed, but the destination never did.

Not Stopping, Just Changing Direction

Failure isn’t about being told “no.” It’s about what happens after.
The birds don’t live only in Lalbagh. They are in the streets, in the markets, in forgotten corners of the city. If one space wasn’t available, we would create another.
If we couldn’t start inside a garden, we’d begin outside its gates.
So, we change course. We adapt. The mission continues in the streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces where kindness doesn’t require permission.

We will spread awareness, encourage people to place water pots in their own spaces and ensure that no bird or small animal has to struggle for something as basic as water.

A setback doesn’t end a purpose. If anything, it strengthens it.
